Writing Without Outlines: A Journey in Creativity

The Creative Process
Writing is a controversial topic, as every writer has a unique method. Some prefer detailed outlines, mapping out their novels chapter by chapter. They believe that an outline keeps their imagination in check and guides their storytelling journey. However, I find outlines restrictive. Instead, I write each chapter as a continuation of the previous one, allowing my imagination to flow freely.
Some might argue that famous writers, with their complex characters and intricate plots, require outlines. I understand this perspective, but personally, I feel that I am more inclined towards a simpler narrative style. I prefer not to complicate my plots unnecessarily.
The Inspiration Behind "The Man With A Limp"
In my book, The Man With A Limp, the story begins with my hero hitchhiking to Santa Cruz, California. He is a profoundly affected Vietnam veteran, trying to find his way after leaving the hospital. His experiences in the war left him severely wounded and with a noticeable limp. As he navigates the streets of San Francisco, he witnesses other veterans who are in worse conditions than he is. This observation prompts him to leave the city before he gets lost in a culture of homelessness characterized by drugs and alcohol.
Lucky, my protagonist, eventually reaches the beautiful beaches of Santa Cruz. Here, he stumbles upon a restaurant called the Santa Cruz Experience. Accompanying him is his faithful companion, a German Shepherd named Max. Max served alongside Lucky in Vietnam, acting as both a bomb-sniffing dog and a protector.
The Army wanted to euthanize Max after their service ended, but Lucky couldn't bear the thought of losing his friend. He pleaded to keep Max and even paid for his dog's transportation to the USA. Together, they approach the restaurant, where they find only the owner present.
“Hi! I am Jack. Can I help you?” the owner asks as Lucky chooses a seat at the end of the dining area, ensuring Max can sit comfortably on the floor next to him. This is where the tale truly begins—a long-haired, bearded man embarking on a new chapter in life alongside his loyal friend.
Introducing "The Commander"
In my previous novel, The Commander, readers meet a curious seventeen-year-old boy named Pete. He faces new adventures in each chapter, mixing themes of good and evil. One of the standout characters in Pete's story is a leader of a biker gang. Unlike typical portrayals of such characters, this gang leader becomes a friend to Pete instead of an adversary.
Pete finds employment in a family restaurant chain, which leads to lifetime friendships. He falls in love and receives a solid education, all while being monitored by his FBI father and stay-at-home mom. Life is vibrant and full of excitement in Pete Malloy's world, a contrast to Lucky's challenging journey.
Reflections from the Road
My creative journey has been significantly influenced by my travels. I composed my eleven poetry books using an iPad that I carried in my motorcycle bag. That device was my companion before it unfortunately crashed. My Harley Davidson, fine-tuned for long rides, traveled over a hundred thousand miles across the Western United States in just two summers.
After the passing of my wife from cancer, I could have sought solace in unhealthy behaviors. Instead, I chose to travel and write poetry. This decision led me to profound reflections and healing. Thankfully, spell check has been an invaluable resource. It offers correct spellings and definitions of words, making the process much smoother. I appreciate how modern technology assists my imagination in flourishing.
